Materials for 5-Axis CNC Machining
RpProto’s 5-axis CNC machining service supports a wide range of materials. Our engineers select the optimal cutting parameters for each material to ensure tight tolerances and superior surface finish.

The most widely machined material in our facility. Outstanding machinability and the highest strength-to-weight ratio make aluminum the go-to choice for aerospace frames, automotive housings, and consumer product enclosures.
Titanium Alloy
Exceptional strength-to-weight ratio combined with biocompatibility. The standard choice for aerospace structural parts and orthopedic implants.
Stainless Steel
Corrosion resistant with excellent surface finish potential. Widely used in food equipment, chemical parts, and surgical instruments requiring sterilization.

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is the gold standard for high-performance engineering plastics. It maintains mechanical strength up to 250 °C, resists aggressive chemicals, and is inherently radiolucent — making it the preferred material for spinal implants, surgical guides, and semiconductor equipment components.
Alloy Steel
High tensile strength and fatigue resistance for shafts, gears, and transmission components operating under heavy loads and cyclic stress conditions.
Copper
Superior electrical and thermal conductivity for heat sinks, electrical connectors, RF shielding components, and precision EDM electrodes.

Our Advantages of 5-Axis CNC Machining
The 5-axis CNC machining center is a high-precision machine tool capable of cutting in five directions simultaneously. Compared with the traditional 3-axis or 4-axis CNC machining center, it has the following advantages:
Machine Complex Shapes
By rotating parts, the 5-axis milling process can achieve the desired shapes without requiring complex fixtures. This simplifies the machining operation and reduces the setup time.
With additional rotation, 5 axis machining helps you machine more complex designs and geometries, such as arcs and angles that can only be processed previously through multiple special fixtures.
Simple Setup
With a 5-axis CNC machine, one can perform machining operations on five faces of a workpiece at the same time. It enable you to manufacture highly complex parts in a single setup. It eliminate the need for complex jigs.
But conventional three-axis machining may require multiple setups to machine parts with multiple faces.
Accuracy and Quality
Five-axis CNC milling can reduce the use of fixtures, avoid multiple positioning and clamping errors, and ensure the geometric accuracy and surface quality of processed parts.
Five-axis CNC can ensure the best cutting position and direction between the tool and the workpiece surface, reduce tool deformation and wear, and improve machining accuracy.
Reduce Processing Time and Cost
5-axis CNC machining accelerates your products to market at lower cost. Five-axis milling process can be automated in multiple directions at one time, reduce processing steps and tool replacement. It reduces human operations, improves processing efficiency, and reduces labor costs.
The additional axes of 5 axis machine use shorter cutting tools to create desired shapes. With minimal or no vibration, these shorter tools can perform high-speed cutting operations. Lesser vibration reduce the chances of getting “chatter” marks on the product. This way, you can achieve better surface finishes and reduce costs and time of post-processing.
How 5 Axis CNC Machine Works?
“5-axis” means the cutting tool can move in five directions. Five axis machines have 3 linear axis, 1 rotary and 1 tilt axis working at the same time to manufacture parts with complicated shapes. All five axes of 5-Axis CNC Machine are moving at the same time. This usually enables more inclination of the worktable or tool spindly, which enhances the range and motion of the rotation.
A 5-axis CNC machine consists of three linear axes (X, Y, and Z) and two rotary axes (A and B) that can rotate around the X and Y axes respectively. By using a 5-axis CNC machine, operators can reduce the need for manual repositioning of the workpiece, and increase the accuracy and efficiency of the machining process.
Two rotary axes are realized using two rotary tables. The first is attached to the machine table, the second to his first. This allows the workpiece to rotate around two axes at the same time. Alternatively, the rotary axis is built into the machine spindle and headstock. This allows the cutting tool and spindle to be tilted to any axis of rotation. The workpiece therefore remains stationary.

FAQs
A 5-axis machine has 3 linear axes, 1 rotary and 1 titlt axes. Five-axis CNC control the coordinated movement of the three linear coordinate axes of X, Y, and Z and the two rotating coordinate axes of A and C in real time. Which means it capable process 5 sides of part at the same time and manufacture very complex and accurate parts at a fast pace. Working on a 5-axis machine minimizes setups.
Five-axis CNC is an efficient, precise and flexible manufacturing method. It is suitable for manufacturing in aviation, aerospace, automobile, mold, medical and other fields.
RpProto achieves coaxiality tolerances of 0.002mm, cylindricity of 0.002mm, and surface finish of Ra0.2 with 5-axis CNC machining.
3-axis CNC moves along X, Y, Z axes and suits flat parts. 5-axis adds two rotary axes, handling complex curved surfaces in one setup — reducing errors and cost for complex parts.
The cost of machining is less expensive with five-axis machines than with their 3-axis counterparts because they need fewer clamps and no special fixture.
You should be aware, though, that programming for the 5-axis technology is much more difficult than for three-axis machining.
5-axis CNC is widely used in aerospace (turbine blades, propellers), medical devices (implants, surgical instruments), automotive (engine blocks, gearbox), robotics, and energy industries.
RpProto machines aluminum, titanium alloy (TC4), stainless steel (SUS420J), 42CrMo alloy steel, tungsten carbide, copper, and various engineering plastics with 5-axis CNC equipment.
The cost of 5-axis CNC machining is influenced by part complexity, material, tolerances, and order volume. While per-unit costs are higher than 3-axis for simple parts, 5-axis machining often reduces total cost for complex geometries by eliminating multiple setups, reducing fixture costs, and shortening lead times.
RpProto offers competitive pricing for both prototype (1-10 pcs) and low-volume production (10-1,000 pcs). Upload your CAD files to receive an instant quote with no obligation.
